Queensland Special Interest Vehicle Scheme (SIVS)

I have a vehicle older than 30 years and I want to get SIVs Registration for it.

Go to the Governments web site and read all the conditions  of the scheme. These conditions might not suit you, for example you cannot use your vehicle for daily use, it can only be used on club approved events or the other exemptions allowed under the SIVs rules. QVVA have the rights to expel any member from the club for breaching these conditions.

Can I join your club to get this approval?

Yes you can and as long as your vehicle meets the SIVs requirements. If you do not renew your membership annually and are not a member of another car club, you are in breach of the conditions of SIVs registration You would then be driving illegally, and insurance cover, including third party, would most likely null and void.

What club events can I attend if on SIVs?

You can attend any documented club event or other clubs’ events. You will need however, to have proof that the event is documented on the clubs’ letterhead. We advise you to print out the page from the website and carry it with you. It can be downloaded to a phone so it can be shown if necessary. The event must be from an incorporated vehicle club or association.

Do I need to have the vehicle insured?

Members are strongly advised to insure their vehicles with a minimum third-party property policy, [as distinct from the compulsory third-party personal insurance],

and preferably a comprehensive policy. Your vehicle must be insured if attending club events especially if your vehicle is on SIVs. If you are using your vehicle outside the SIVs regulations you may not be insured.

What is an impromptu event?

An impromptu event is an event that has been initiated by a club member, involves one or more vehicles, and must comply with the following elements:

 involves an invitation to wider club members to attend the event; and is either

 endorsed in advance of the event by the relevant club committee; or,

 where it exists, complies with published club guidelines as to what is a valid event; and

 Is listed either in the newsletter, on the website, or social media page (or in another manner approved by the club  such as the club calendar of events) prior to the event.

Note: QVVA maintains a register of endorsed impromptu events. This register contains information on the impromptu event.

To access the Impromptu event site on our clubs’ website you will need a mobile phone number that is documented with the club. If you leave the club this access is denied.

Can I drive my SIVs registered vehicle into other States in Australia?

Yes. Once your vehicle is registered on SIVs registration it is accepted in all other States as long as you are on an approved event. 

For example, should you wish to go to any vehicle rally within Queensland and any other state you need to carry proof that you are entering the with the correct dates and venue. QVVA recommends when travelling to and from events in a SIVs registered vehicle that all care is taken.
